When is a root canal necessary?

Endodontic treatment becomes necessary when the pulp (commonly referred to as the nerve of the tooth) becomes damaged from decay, a crack in the tooth, periodontal disease and even repeated dental procedures. Left untreated, the pulp inflammation or infection may cause pain or lead to an abscess. Root canal therapy involves removing the infected or inflamed pulp, thoroughly cleaning the tooth and sealing the canal space with a biocompatible filling. This therapy involves local anesthesia and may be completed in one visit. More complicated cases may require additional visits to our office. If your tooth is not amemable to endodontic treatment or if the chance of success is unfavorable, we will inform you at your consultation or when a complication becomes evident during or after treatment.

After root canal treatment is complete, your tooth will be filled with a temporary restoration. A record of your treatment with digital x-rays will be sent to your restorative Endodontist. Please contact their office for a follow-up permanent restoration 2 to 4 weeks after treatment is completed at our office. Your restorative Endodontist will decide what type of restoration is necessary to protect your tooth.

In certain teeth that are severely infected we will follow up with an examination to evaluate the healing progress. The appointment will require only a few minutes and you will pay no additional fee.
