Dental emergencies, such as cracked or broken teeth, require immediate attention to prevent further damage and pain. Knowing the right steps can save your tooth and reduce complications.

1. Immediate First Aid Steps

  • Rinse Your Mouth: Use warm water to clean the area.
  • Control Bleeding: Apply gentle pressure with a clean gauze.
  • Reduce Swelling: Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek.
  • Preserve Tooth Fragments: If a piece of the tooth breaks off, store it in milk or saline.

2. Assessing the Damage

Cracks and fractures vary in severity:

  • Minor Cracks: May only affect the enamel and require bonding.
  • Deep Fractures: May extend into the pulp, requiring root canal therapy or the GentleWave® Procedure.
  • Chipped Teeth: Small chips can often be repaired with dental bonding.
  • Severely Broken Teeth: Sometimes, extraction and restoration with a crown or implant may be necessary.

3. When to See a Dentist Immediately

  • Severe pain or sensitivity
  • Visible tooth fragments or large cracks
  • Swelling or infection signs
  • Difficulty biting or chewing

4. Treatment Options

  • Bonding: For minor chips and cracks
  • Dental Crowns: For significant structural damage
  • GentleWave® Procedure: Cleans and preserves teeth affected by deep cracks
  • Root Canal Therapy: When pulp is exposed or infected

5. Prevention Tips

  • Wear mouthguards during sports
  • Avoid chewing ice, hard candy, or pens
  • Address bruxism early with a nightguard
  • Maintain regular dental check-ups

Prompt care prevents infection, further fractures, and tooth loss, ensuring both dental health and aesthetic appearance remain intact.
